Coherent has expanded its OBIS family of plug-and-play smart laser
modules with a new fiber-pigtailed (FP) option at several wavelengths
(e.g. 405 nm, 488 nm, 640 nm). Specifically, these OBIS FP lasers
are offered with 1 meter of single-mode, polarization preserving fiber,
terminating in a standard FC/APC connector, thus simplifying their
integration into OEM instruments. In addition to the inherent
ease of use advantages of this compact, self-contained laser platform,
these new OBIS FP lasers offer low noise and can be directly
modulated.
OBIS FP lasers achieve low noise and exceptional output stability due
to two factors. The first is an output beam with the
industry’s lowest beam drift to maintain efficient
coupling. Second is the use of telecom-type architecture and
methods, such as laser welding, to yield drift-free opto-mechanical
coupling. OBIS FP lasers also deliver longer lifetimes because
they successfully address the main cause of failure in lasers coupled
to single mode fibers - namely facet damage due to the high power
density at the fiber facets. OBIS FP lasers use a proprietary
design securing a four times longer lifetime than conventional fiber
designs which is particularly important for shorter wavelengths such as
405 nm.
Applications for OBIS FP lasers span life sciences, metrology and
inspection, where fiber delivery is commonly utilized for
miniaturization or other benefits. Specific examples in life
sciences include several fluorescence-based techniques such as flow
cytometry, confocal microscopy and array readers for drug
discovery. Moreover, the wavelength scalability of the OBIS
platform enables optimum excitation of target fluorophores.
